    Intent

At Lawford C of E  Primary School, we recognise reading as a key life skill, which underpins access to the rest of the curriculum. We aim for children to read words and simple sentences by the end of Reception, become successful, fluent readers by the end of Key Stage 1 and develop a lifelong love of reading as they move through school.

    Implementation

Phonics is taught daily throughout EYFS and KS1. It is then continued through interventions as and when the children require it as identified by the class teacher.

Phonics planning follows a set structure to ensure delivery of lessons is clear and consistent across all year groups. We follow the Bug Club Phonics scheme and all lessons consist of a teach, practice, apply method to ensure all children are given the same opportunities.

Our reading books match our phonics scheme and the children have reading books which they are encouraged to read regularly at home which match their current phonics level.

In Key Stage 2 the children have 'Phonics for 5' sessions daily. These a quick 5 minutes sessions aimed at revisiting and securing  their phonological awareness

Here's some of the amazing learning happening in Phonics at the moment...
